PhotoView: EXIF Photo Viewer
Press kit, October 2026

Full-screen photos. Metadata one tap away.

IN ONE SENTENCE

PhotoView is a photo viewer for iPhone, iPad and Mac that shows photos full screen and, with one tap, how they were made: camera, lens, exposure, place, keywords, copyright, and more.

IN A FEW PARAGRAPHS

PhotoView shows the photos, Live Photos and videos in the photo library full screen. One tap or click shows a photo’s metadata in an overlay: camera and lens, aperture, shutter speed and ISO, the place it was taken, and the caption, keywords and copyright it carries. The next tap leaves the photo on its own again. When you move to the next photo, the overlay is updated immediately.

The overlay shows only the fields its user picks, out of more than 200 in 18 groups: EXIF, IPTC, GPS, XMP and DNG data, video details, and the computational information an iPhone records, such as HDR gain maps, depth data and spatial video. It comes in three sizes and with three font sizes, and it can be moved to any of the four corners so that important parts of the photo remain visible. Built-in help provides explanations for each field.

Aside from the metadata, PhotoView is designed for viewing photos at your leisure: slideshows with seven transitions, and AirPlay to the TV from iPhone and iPad, where the big screen shows only the picture itself. On the Mac, PhotoView also opens originals and raw files from any folder, reads .xmp sidecar files and Finder tags, and offers Quick Look and full keyboard control.

Every field is read on the device. PhotoView never uploads a photo and never changes a photo or its metadata. There are no accounts, no tracking and no ads.

PhotoView is free. PhotoView Pro adds IPTC, locations on a map, XMP, DNG and the maker notes of Canon and Nikon cameras. Pro can be tried free for seven days, with nothing charged at the end. It can be unlocked permanently with a single purchase that covers iPhone, iPad and Mac. There is no subscription.

FEATURES

Free
• Full-screen viewer for photos, Live Photos and videos: the whole library, the user’s own albums, shared albums and smart albums.
• Metadata overlay, shown and hidden with one tap or click. Fields, size, font size and corner are up to the user. On the Mac, the metadata can also have a window of its own.
• Camera, lens and exposure data in plain language, plus image, file and video details and the computational data an iPhone records.
• Slideshows with seven transitions, from Ken Burns to crossfade.
• AirPlay from iPhone and iPad: the TV shows the picture only, never the controls or the metadata.
• Favorites, albums and folders, and multi-select to add, remove or delete.
• On the Mac: folders and raw files from disk, Quick Look, keyboard control, slideshows on a second display.
• Built-in help for every field and every feature.

PhotoView Pro (one-time purchase, free 7-day trial)
• IPTC and IPTC Extension: headline, caption, keywords, creator, copyright, usage terms, people, events and licensing.
• Location: GPS coordinates with altitude and direction, and the photo on a map.
• XMP written by Lightroom, Capture One or Photoshop, on the Mac also from .xmp sidecar files.
• DNG raw-pipeline tags, and maker notes from Canon and Nikon.
• Finder tags and comments for files opened on the Mac.
• On iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27: the rating, keywords and caption set in the Photos app, next to the values in the file, each marked with its source.

NEW IN VERSION 1.0.1 (OCTOBER 23, 2026)

With iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, PhotoView also shows the rating, keywords and caption set in the Photos app, next to the values stored in the file and each marked with its source (PhotoView Pro). The overlay has three font sizes, Settings has a new Support pane, the app now speaks British English, and on the Mac a slideshow can be controlled from the keyboard.

QUOTES FROM THE DEVELOPER

“When I look at a photo, I often want to know exactly how or where I took it. I wanted an app that displays my photo full-screen, shows the exact information I’m interested in right now in one corner, and lets me hide it with the next tap. That’s PhotoView.”
Detlev Voss

“Personally, I prefer apps that don’t show ads and don’t force me to create an account first. That’s why PhotoView has neither of those things, and there’s no tracking implemented in the app at all.”
Detlev Voss

ABOUT THE DEVELOPER

I’m Detlev Voss, an independent developer of apps for iOS and, more recently, macOS. I love traveling in a motorhome with my wife and our dog. I’m also an avid amateur photographer and enjoy various kinds of music, from classical to country, rock, and pop.

I started with two apps: a casual Sudoku game and Timers & Alarms, a utility with countdown timers (including repeating and interval timers), a simple alarm clock, and a stopwatch.

As a photographer, I wanted a quick way to check a photo’s camera settings, description, and keywords, so my next app was PhotoView: EXIF Photo Viewer. It shows your photos full-screen, with a metadata overlay just a tap or click away. The overlay is customizable and supports more than 200 fields, including EXIF, IPTC, DNG, and XMP data.
